Free and abandoned vs $45 and maintained

SalHack costs nothing, and that's not a sales pitch, it's just the situation: ionar open-sourced the whole thing under MIT around 2020 after leaving the project, and nobody has picked up maintenance since. What you download is a frozen snapshot of a codebase, not a supported product. That's a perfectly legitimate choice if you know that's the deal.

Terminus costs $45 for a lifetime license and is actively developed. That price buys ongoing updates, a launcher that logs you in and gets you playing, a web dashboard and config cloud, and Opal Client included free, itself an $8.99 hybrid client on its own, not just a repo you have to compile before you can log in.

MC 1.12.2 vs modern Minecraft: one client stalled, the other didn't

SalHack's build is pinned to Mixin 0.7.11, with the project's own build warning against updating it. That single decision locked the client to MC 1.12.2 with no forward path, ever. If you're not already playing that version, none of this is a choice you get to make.

Terminus runs on modern Minecraft as a Fabric client. If you play current Minecraft, this comparison is mostly academic: SalHack isn't in the running for that server, it's a museum piece, a good one, but one that stopped moving years ago.

Minigame-tuned combat with range across most other servers too.

Deep per-module customization

Settings built for actual tuning, not a frozen 2020 module list.

Desktop launcher

Handles versions and updates for you, no source to compile yourself.

Config cloud

Sync a saved setup to any PC in seconds.

Anarchy and exploits vs minigame combat

SalHack's roughly 120 modules lean hard into the 2b2t anarchy meta: CrystalAura and Surround for crystal PvP, NewChunks and StashFinder for hunting down bases, and server-exploit modules like Auto32k and PortalGodMode built around 1.12.2-era packet handling. Its own documentation is upfront that there's no real server-side anticheat in scope on the servers it targets, so subtlety was never part of the design brief.

Terminus is built the other way: deep per-module customization tuned first for BedWars/SkyWars-style minigame combat, with a broader set built to hold up on most other servers too. Different problem, different toolkit entirely.

Open source you can read vs a finished, maintained product

SalHack ships full MIT source, including a README that names exactly where its code came from: KAMI Blue's base API, Seppuku's modules, Schematica for schematics. That transparency is genuinely useful if you want to study a working 1.12.2 anarchy client, and credit where it's due, plenty of free clients aren't this honest about their own lineage.

Terminus is closed-source. What you get instead is a finished, maintained product rather than a codebase to pick apart, plus a launcher, dashboard, and config cloud that a compiled-yourself jar doesn't offer.

None of this makes SalHack a real rival to Terminus day to day. It's a free, abandoned, MIT reference client for a Minecraft version most players moved on from years ago, built for a completely different playstyle. Being free, open, and candid about where its code came from is a genuine point in its favor, and if you already play 1.12.2 anarchy servers, it remains a legitimate pick on its own terms.

When SalHack is the better call

Where SalHack wins

  • You already play 2b2t or similar anarchy servers on MC 1.12.2
  • You want free crystal-PvP and base-finding tools, full stop
  • You want to read or legally reuse MIT-licensed client source with documented lineage
  • You're fine building from source yourself, with no updates since 2020

Where it falls short

  • No dedicated stealth set, because anarchy servers leave little anticheat to hide from
  • No launcher and no support channel to fall back on when something breaks
  • Locked to MC 1.12.2 with no forward path to current Minecraft
  • You're compiling Forge/Mixin source before you've even logged in once

Which one should you pick?

If you want a maintained client on modern Minecraft, combat tuned for minigames out of the box, a launcher and dashboard behind it, and Opal Client bundled in for the same $45, that's Terminus. If you already play 1.12.2 anarchy servers and want to keep running something free, open, and honest about its own lineage, SalHack remains a fair pick on its own terms.
